It is the heart of Piacenza. It takes its name from the two bronze horses representing Alessandro Farnese and his son Ranuccio. The other symbol of the square is the Gothic Palace, with the red Verona marble base and the upper part in terracotta, built in 1281 by Alberto Scoto.

Where the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and Giustina stands, a great example of Romanesque architecture on which the facade is clearly visible stylistic enrichments of the centuries following its foundation.

In 1522 the construction of the current church entrusted to the Piacenza architect Alessio Tramello begins. The church has a central plan, a very widespread structure in those years, and is striking from the outside for its harmony and simplicity, and inside we find the dome frescoed by Pordenone.

Construction began in 1558 by the Farnese family who wanted to show their power. Today the building houses the Civic Museums of Piacenza divided into four sections: the carriage museum, the armory, the Risorgimento museum and the archaeological museum.

All the walls of the Sala dei Teatini are frescoed with saints, angels and prophets, biblical and allegorical scenes. The church instead houses the remains of the patron saint of Piacenza and you can admire the frescoes by Camillo Gavasetti in the presbytery.

The Gallery was inaugurated in 1931, and groups a core of works between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries divided into twenty rooms. The "Portrait of a Lady" by Klimt stolen from the gallery on February 22, 1997 and found on December 10, 2019 is part of the 1900 collection. The Alberoni Gallery in Piacenza is worth a visit for Antonello's Hecce Homo or Cristo alla Colonna (1473) from Messina.

The church of San Sisto is a Renaissance basilica, while the first is dedicated to San Savino.
